Rodney O’Hara Mcknight, 60, of Callahan, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Born in Fernandina Beach, Florida, on June 27, 1966, to the late Benjamin Mcknight and Daisy Mae Nelson, Rodney lived a life that was anything but ordinary. If you knew Rodney, you knew his smile, his laugh, his unmistakable personality, and his ability to make just about anyone feel like they had known him forever. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger and never needed a reason to bring people together. He simply had a way of making life a little more fun for everyone around him.

Rodney loved life, and he knew how to live it. Music was a big part of who he was, especially reggae music and, above all, Bob Marley. Whether he was singing along to his favorite songs, dancing like nobody was watching, or simply enjoying the music, Rodney was happiest when he was surrounded by good people, good music, and good times. His love for music was something he carried with him everywhere, and it was hard not to smile when Rodney was in his element.

He was also a sports lover through and through. From Florida Gators football to baseball and everything in between, Rodney enjoyed just about any sport and never missed an opportunity to cheer on a team or share his opinions about a game. His Florida Gators were especially close to his heart, and he proudly stood behind his team. Whether it was watching a game, talking about sports, or celebrating a win, his enthusiasm was contagious.

If there was one thing Rodney loved nearly as much as music, it was feeding people. Cooking wasn't just something he was good at; it was one of the ways he showed his love. A talented cook with a true passion for his craft, Rodney spent his younger years as head chef at Amelia Island Plantation before eventually opening his own business, Hot Rods BBQ. But his greatest joy was never just about the food. It was about the people gathering around the table.

Thanksgiving was especially special to Rodney. It became his tradition to cook turkeys for what seemed like half the town, making sure everyone had something to eat and a reason to gather. He didn't need much of an excuse to fire up the kitchen, feed a crowd, or share what he had. If you were hungry, there was a good chance Rodney was going to make sure you left full. That was simply who he was. He gave generously, welcomed people openly, and loved making memories over a good meal.

For more than 30 years, Melissa was Rodney's life partner and best friend. They shared a special kind of love and friendship, built over decades of life, laughter, memories, and experiences together. Their bond was a meaningful part of Rodney's life, and the years they shared will always be cherished.

More than anything, Rodney lived for his three children. Being their dad was one of the greatest parts of his life, and he poured so much of himself into raising them. He wanted to teach them everything he could, sharing what he knew, passing down the thing's life had taught him, and making sure they had the knowledge and experiences to find their own way in the world. Whether through the big lessons in life or the little everyday moments, he was always giving them pieces of himself that they will carry forever. No matter how old they got, they would always be his kids, and his love for them never wavered.

Rodney leaves behind so much more than memories. He leaves behind the sound of his laughter, the music he loved, the stories that will continue to be told, and the meals that brought people together. He leaves behind three children who will forever hear his voice in the lessons he taught them, find him in the things he passed down, and carry his love with them in everything they do. He leaves behind countless moments that will remind those who knew him just how special he was. His presence was felt throughout his family and his community, and the love people had for him reflected the love he so freely gave. There will never be another Rodney, and life will certainly be a little quieter without him.

In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Mcknight.

He leaves behind his loving wife and life partner of more than 30 years, Melissa Kilpatrick; his children, Lacy (Skyler) Whitaker, Ben Mcknight, and Jade Mcknight; his grandchildren, Maverick Whitaker and Vincent Whitaker, who is eagerly anticipated in December; his siblings, Elton Humphries, Essence Humphries, and Mahogany Humphries; his cousin, Veronica Pryor; and numerous other family members and loved ones who will forever carry him in their hearts.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home – Callahan Chapel. A service celebrating Rodney's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home – Callahan Chapel. Burial will follow at Pinckney Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Folkston, Georgia.

Though we wish we had more time with him, we can find comfort in knowing that a life as full of love, laughter, music, and generosity as Rodney's never truly leaves us. So the next time a Bob Marley song comes on, a good game is playing, or a table is filled with family and friends, we hope you'll think of Rodney, turn the music up, and remember a man who knew how to make the most of life.
