Cheryl Janice Pownall

Cheryl Janice Singley Pownall, age 76, passed away leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, service, and devotion to her family. Born in Griffin, Georgia, Janice was the daughter of the late Ann Barnes Singley and David Stephens Singley. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Ronald David Singley.

Janice was a graduate of Callahan High School, Class of 1968, where she was a cheerleader for the Ramblers. She continued her education at Georgia Baptist School of Nursing and dedicated her career to caring for others. She began at a Pediatrics office then the bulk of career was a Henry Medical now Piedmont Henry, but also did home health care and other positions in the nursing field.

On October 30, 1971, Janice married the love of her life, Buddy (Henry Frances) Pownall. Their marriage was blessed with a lifetime of love, family, faith, travel, and countless cherished memories.

Janice's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Buddy Pownall; her two sons, Matthew Jamie Pownall and his wife, Cassie, and their daughters, Julia Ann Willard (Pownall) and Bailey Elise Pownall; and Kyle David Pownall and his wife, Lisa Nan Pownall, and their children, Rubye Grace Pownall, Della Janice Pownall, and Kellen David Pownall. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Singley Bland.

Janice was known for her sweet and gentle spirit, patience, kindness, organization, and selfless love for others. She was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed the holidays, when she could gather family and friends around her table for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She also loved traveling with Buddy, her family, and friends, creating memories that will be treasured by those who shared those special times with her.

Janice was a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church for 41+ years, where she served the Lord and others in countless ways. She volunteered in the Nursery, Sewing Ministry, Prayer Room, Bereavement Ministry, Boomers Life Group, Clothes Closet, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, Women’s Ministry, and on various church committees. She taught Mission Friends, served in the concession stand, volunteered as a Camp Winshape nurse, participated in a mission trip to Honduras, and faithfully provided rides for friends to church and medical appointments.

Janice never hesitated to serve when there was a need. The Lord used her in each of these ministries to further His Kingdom and share the love of Christ with those around her. She truly lived as the hands and feet of Jesus in her community. Her life was characterized by selfless love, compassion, generosity, strong friendships, and a willingness to meet the needs of others. She faithfully supported her pastors and church staff and encouraged countless people through her quiet, steadfast service.

Above all, Janice loved Jesus Christ. Her faith was not simply something she professed—it was something she lived. Her greatest desire was for her family and friends to know Jesus as their personal Savior and to grow in their relationship with Him. She leaves behind a beautiful example of a life devoted to loving God and loving others.

Janice will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. While her absence leaves a great void, those who loved her find comfort and hope in knowing that she is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved above all else.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Janice's life will be held at Salem Baptist Church, 1724 GA Highway 155 N, McDonough, GA 30252, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00–3:00 p.m.

A graveside service and burial will be held Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Live Oak Baptist Church Cemetery in Callahan, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Baptist Church’s Kitchen Remodel Fund in memory of Janice.
